I've noticed this repeatedly occurring-- open Chrome, have a couple windows open for a while, close the windows, and yet the memory usage (as I type) is maxxed out.
A look into the Process window shows Google with 2 instances, each using a moderate amount of memory. However, after closing the windows a Chrome instance is still running. Closing the process drops memory usage back down to normal levels.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit , 4 GB RAM, 64 X2 4200+ 2.2GHz CPU

Thanks
