I am seeing a few articles out there speculating on why Chrome might not take off. I think it will and in under a year or much less, it should become one of the major players in the field. Some reasons just of the top of my head... :D

1. Its not just for Geeks. The performance improvement will be noticeable by the average Internet user. Just open something heavy like Gmail or Yahoomail.
2. It just does what its meant to do - open pages real fast and in a stable manner. Most users wouldn't mind the lack of extensions etc. I mean you hardly notice the browser once you start using Chrome! Its just awesome.
3. It SHOULD be more secure though it is difficult to prove this. I like the different processes idea a lot. Besides the code is open source, so people will figure out how to fix issues pretty quick once the community starts growing.
4. Chrome is on the Google home page, you CANNOT get a better ad spot than that!
5. Its Google! People have this intrinsic trust in everything they do, just look how fast Gmail has caught on. Besides, I think it has brought in some really new ideas - especially the Tab behavior, the most radical thing done after tabs themselves were introduced, many of the other ideas like the different processes, the v8 engine etc are under the hood.

I totally agree with you regarding the fact that Chrome's got great chances to become a big player before long, yet I think the lack of extensions is something quite limiting at the moment.
I love Firefox's extensions, and I actively use many of them for work or to make my life easier with stuff.
This lack in Google means that I am using it to surf a little every now and then, but can't yet switch from Firefox.
But as you said, most people don't even know what extensions are, so there is no doubt Chrome is going to be a success.
This, also considering that a link on Google's homepage will surely have its effect.
For a while there will still be problems with the engine they've chosen for the rendering (best choice at the moment), but being it used by a browser destined to become popular, I am sure all of us developers will care more about Safari & co. when writing our web applications!

I totally agree with both of you: with Vito Botta on the extensions. I use FF3 for its speed, security AND the extensions which definitely make life easier.
And with GCC on the taking off part! Google rules the world and no one will really be able to stop that. No one will really want to either. ;)

GCC: What do you think about webkit?

Basically it is a "Browser War" between the 3 big ones. Firefox, Opera and Safari. While Firefox certainly has the lead in the amount of users. However, I dislike the browser because of its stability. It crashes constantly and gets unresponsive when loading large web pages.

Whereas Opera and Safari along with IE are not any better.

Google Chrome will outrun them all, apart from the amount of users because Firefox has been in it in the long run and continues to grow. But Chrome will need to add a lot more things to attract more users such as easier theme changes, plug-ins and add-ons.

Google Chrome will be number 1 in a year or 2 if they continue to listen to the users. And because there Google, you can't beat Google.
